“No,” Adam replied, voice a little hoarse. “Now sounds good.”

The next morning, he felt it even more, his body heavy, skin hot to the touch.

“Let’s go for a run before breakfast,” Ben insisted and once Adam had changed, the Alpha’s wolf nudged and cajoled him outside and they tore through the woods scaring birds, rabbits and mice alike. Adam knew his scent was getting more enticing, as every time they paused, Ben’s nose was pushed against his fur. They arrived back at the house mid-morning, changing in the living room.

Adam’s heat had fully matured, his body craving Ben’s touch at a magnitude he’d never experienced before. It eclipsed his heats with Harvey by a large margin. Ben scented him and Adam was sure he knew but still the Alpha asked. “Is it time? Are you ready?”

He nodded eagerly, if a little shyly, but let Ben lead him to their bedroom.

“For our first time, I want to be face to face when I’m inside you,” Ben said as they crossed the threshold.

That would be different. Adam had never done it like that. He lay back on the bed, watching Ben watch him.

“You are so gorgeous,” the Alpha said, “and you smell like the nicest thing in the whole world. If you were a foodstuff, I’d never eat anything else.”

Adam laughed. “You know I’m not on the menu, right?”

“Right.” Ben grinned at him. “I’ll do my best not to bite too hard but you are pretty delicious looking.”

He crawled onto the bed on his hands and knees.

  “Are you comfortable like that?”

  Adam nodded.

  “Good.”

That was all the warning he had before Ben straddled him, his mouth descending on Adam’s chest licking a hot, wet circle around Adam’s nipple before his lips hit their target and sucked. Adam gasped and squirmed. The Alpha knew all his most sensitive spots and that was one. As he moved his head to give the other nipple equal attention, Adam’s hands reached up, fingers tangling in Ben’s hair, reveling in being able to touch his Alpha.

Ben shifted lower, much lower, until he was nose to nose with Adam’s groin. He was already stiffening under the Alpha’s capable hands but he knew that that wasn’t good enough for Ben.

Ben nuzzled his nose in the root, brushing against the scant hair there. His tongue flicked out, nudging the warm skin. Adam’s hips bucked and Ben’s hands were suddenly there, holding him still.

“Ah, ah. This is what you asked for, right? The thing with my mouth. What my Omega wants, my Omega gets.”

It was a slow, torturous journey of pleasure as Ben’s tongue traveled the slow path to the tip of Adam’s cock. Adam shivered in anticipation, knowing what was coming. He wasn’t disappointed, Ben’s mouth engulfing him, warm and wet, his tongue lapping eagerly. Adam gulped hard and lay back, just letting the pleasure crash over him. He was so close, so close…

“Wait,” he said, half sitting up, “I don’t want to come until you’re inside me.”

Ben’s hand suddenly wrapped around him, the pressure forestalling Adam’s climax as his mouth released him.

The Alpha grinned up at him. “I like a wolf who knows their own mind.” Adam couldn’t help but grin back. That was something Ben had doubted before but he didn’t any longer. Adam wasn’t shy about telling him what he wanted or needed.

Adam found the position Ben shifted him to odd, Adam on his back, his knees bent, legs either side of Ben’s thighs, clamped around him to hold himself steady.

Ben worked the fingers of one hand between Adam’s cheeks, finding the entrance slick from his heat. He rubbed his fingers back and forth across the tight hole, coating them, before slipping one inside.

“How’s that feel?” he asked, bringing his face close to Adam’s who couldn’t resist moving in for a kiss.

“Good,” he replied when they pulled apart. “But not enough, I need more. I need you inside me.”

“One step at a time.” Ben answered, “but don’t worry, I won’t keep you waiting long.”

A second finger slipped in, then a third, Adam’s eyes closing at the sensations that threatened to drown him. Then Ben’s fingers pulled out and he ran them along his own length, coating himself in Adam’s slick.

“I want to see your eyes, every step of the way,” Ben said, his hands on Adam’s thighs, coaxing his legs a little further apart.

And then he was there, at Adam’s entrance, pushing inside. It wasn’t slow or fast but just right and Adam threw his head back as he was filled. They stayed like that, one body, pressed tight together, before Ben started to thrust. It took time to build up a rhythm but each time he pushed in, he brushed something inside of Adam, something that begged to be touched, that sent off a spark of pleasure like kindling that hadn’t quite caught. He knew what he needed for the fire to blaze brightly.

“Harder,” he demanded. “I need more.”

Ben leaned in to kiss him, Adam stretching up to meet him. “Your wish is my command.”

His thrusts became more forceful, each one rocking Adam back on the bed. The spark of pleasure inside him became a pulse, building and building. Ben’s hand gripped the bedclothes tightly either side of Adam as he moved, though every so often he would catch hold of the Omega, shifting his position minutely.

“Almost there,” he panted. “Can you feel it?”

Adam could. The pulse was reaching its peak. As it did, Ben reached one hand between them, reached for Adam’s hard, leaking cock, and pumped it in time with his thrusts. Adam’s hands held on to Ben’s sides as the Alpha came with a shout, stilling inside Adam and sending the Omega over the edge and into an oblivion of pleasure that took his breath away.

When he opened his eyes again, Ben lay panting on the duvet next to him, their heads side by side.

“That was worth waiting for,” he said, hand catching Adam’s chin and pulling him in for a kiss.

Adam couldn’t help but agree. The Alpha had been right to wait until his was in heat. But they’d missed something…

“You forgot the bond bite,” he said, reaching a hand to the back of his neck.

“No, I didn’t. I wanted your first time to be like this, all about the sex. Second go will be about the bond. I have the position all worked out.”

And so he did, hours later, as he took Adam at the sink, their eyes meeting in the mirror. Ben gave him the bond bite at the height of his orgasm, eclipsing the pain, then carried him into bed.

“What’s the third position?” Adam wondered out loud as they drowsed.

“You’ll just have to wait and find out,” Ben replied, and Adam could hear the Alpha’s grin. “Sleep, Adam. We’re going to need it.”

  Chapter Thirty

A whole year passed quickly and though they ventured away from the cottage a handful of times over the year, going to visit Sam and the Glenoak Pack, most of their time was spent together. The boredom got too much for Ben by the autumn and he got a job nearby, while Adam continued his learning and adjusting to life out in what Ben sometimes called ‘the real world’.

Ben used his contacts to get stuff Adam needed, like a birth cert and other papers which allowed him to get a driver’s permit. It became clear after the encounter with Gray Valley that the Packs were aware of their location, but Glenoak’s willingness to publically recognize Ben’s claim on Adam, and the Warrior’s threats, prevented any retaliation against them.

Still, more and more Adam got the sense that they were just passing time. Ben was happy, on the surface, but beneath it, frustration and boredom seemed to grow. He guessed being part of the Enforcers had been more than just a job to Ben and now he lacked that something that kept his mind occupied and away from darker thoughts.

Adam had two heats his first year. His second year his heat came late, just after Easter. Ben took a few days off work and ravished him, Adam getting his full and undivided attention. It seemed to lift Ben out of the funk he’d fallen into but the effect was temporary and a month after his heat ended, Ben was bac
k to brooding and stomping around the house.

Two months after his heat and Adam wasn’t back to his normal self. Something was different about him but he wasn’t sure what it was. And then a suspicion grew in his mind, one he tried very hard to ignore. He watched Benjamin, looking for the right time to tell him, but the Alpha was always grumpy or busy. He was on the phone a lot too, to Sam and other people. It was clear he wasn’t happy. That Adam didn’t make him happy. Would he leave Adam? Go back to his job as Enforcer? Those worries constantly preyed on his mind, alongside the more obvious and growing worry of the things that were changing inside him.

Ben could tell something was up with Adam but he wasn’t sure what it was. Adam didn’t seem inclined to tell him but it felt like every time he walked into whatever room Adam had holed up in, the Omega was slamming his encyclopedia or the laptop closed and giving him a wide-eyed innocent look. The few times Ben caught him unawares, Adam looked worried about something and had taken to going for walks around the perimeter of the cottage, staring out into the distance. Whenever Ben left the house and returned, Adam always seemed to be waiting for him anxiously.

When it happened for the dozenth time, Adam closing the encyclopedia in a hurry and scurrying from the room, Ben noticed he’d manage to bend the corner of the page he’d been reading. He opened it up, took a long look at it and went in search of his Omega.

He found Adam in their bedroom, sitting on the bed, curled up and staring out the window. He took a seat beside him. Adam didn’t react to his presence.

“Anything you want to talk about?” he asked.

Adam opened his mouth as if to speak, then closed it, frowning.

“You’ve gotten so quiet lately. I’m worried. I know I haven’t been good company this past while, and I’m sorry for that, but you know I’m here for you, if there’s anything you want to tell me?”

Adam gave him a sideways glance but didn’t speak.

Ben reached for him, tugging him into his arms, Adam’s back to his chest, his arms wrapping the Omega in a bear hug.

“You know I love you, right? Even when I’m being a grumpy, mopey bastard?”

“I know. I love you too.”

Ben nuzzled his nose against the soft skin behind Adam’s ear.

“I’m glad to hear that. I was starting to get worried you’d met a cute werefox or something.”

Adam snorted and leaned back into his embrace, rubbing his cheek against Ben’s chin.

“What if I’m not ready to be a parent? I’m still only learning how to be a person and not just an Omega.”

“Well, you wouldn’t be alone. That’s the thing about a bond, there’s two of us, we share the good times and the responsibilities. The question isn’t are you ready to be a parent, it’s are we ready to be parents.”

  “And are we?” Adam persisted.

“All I know is what my grandfather told me. You’re never fully prepared to be a father, but it happens anyway and you deal with it. It’s about your strength as a person and the strength of your bond. And I think our bond is pretty damn strong.”

He pressed a kiss to the side of Adam’s head. “So, is there anything you want to tell me or can I find out for myself?”

At Adam’s quizzical look, he flipped the Omega onto his back on the bed. Adam watched him, bemused, as Ben pushed up the Omega’s t-shirt, exposing his stomach. Then Ben lay his head down, ear pressed just below Adam’s belly button, and he listened, his eyes on Adam’s face.

It took time to hear it but once he did the sound was unmistakable. A fast patter that hadn’t been there before. A slow smile spread across his face.

  “We’re really having a baby.”

Adam was watching him anxiously. “Are you… are you happy?”

He grinned. “Yeah, of course. I mean, it’s not exactly a huge surprise, we knew it might happen,” he said. “How long have you known?”

Adam shrugged. “I started feeling different a few weeks after my heat ended. I didn’t know what it meant for certain until a week or so ago.”

Ben used one finger to nudge Adam’s chin until he met his gaze.

  “What stopped you telling me?”

“I wasn’t sure. About lots of things. I thought maybe you wouldn’t be happy. Or that you were thinking of leaving. If you left, there wouldn’t be a bond and the pregnancy…” Adam glanced away again.

“No, hey, Adam, look at me,” he coaxed, guiding Adam’s gaze to his. “You’re my Omega, we’re bonded. There’s no way I’d ever leave you, not least because I know what would happen to you if I did. It’s true I haven’t been the happiest these past few months but that’s nothing to do with you. You’ve been the light in my life. A life that’s been dark since I was a child, since my family was torn apart.”

Adam listened with rapt attention, as he did anytime Ben spoke of his past.

“But there is something I’ve been wanting to talk to you about. I wasn’t sure about it until I heard our news just now.”

  Adam sat up.

  “What is it?”

“Sebastian has called a few times to talk to me. There’s been a shift in some of the Pack alliances. Glenoak is in a much stronger position than before. They’ve offered us a place in their Pack. They need more young males, and another Omega would be a huge boost. They feel their position now affords them some latitude and we’d be safe with them.”

“If it’s a good thing then why does it make you unhappy?”

“I guess it’s because accepting a place in another Pack is giving up on my chance of ever going home, to Gray Valley. I thought I’d come to terms with that a long time ago but I guess I hadn’t. I’m sorry if I scared you.” He watched Adam’s eyes carefully, looking for signs of irreparable damage to their bond.

“It’s okay,” Adam reassured, one hand clutching Ben’s shoulder.

“There was another consideration. And that was you. I really think you’ve needed this, our time here. To heal, to find yourself. It would have been too much, in amongst a Pack right away. But you’ve come such a long way and I think you’re ready to move onto the next stage. Which involves things like friends and socializing. And with a baby on the way, it might be good to be around people who know what they’re doing. And a Pack medic who knows a thing or two about Omegas. I’m not saying we wouldn’t manage by ourselves and if staying here is what you want, then that’s what we’ll do, but I think life in a Pack would be a better one, for both of us and for our child.”

  “Children, you mean,” Adam corrected.

“Wow, you’re planning ahead, aren’t you? Why don’t we just start with the one on its way and see how that goes?”

“But… didn’t you hear when you listened?” Adam seemed puzzled and it took a moment for Ben to realize what his Omega was trying to tell him.

“I don’t have your bat ears, just ordinary shifter ones,” he joked as he bent his head again, listening intently. He caught the fast patter easily now he knew what to listen for but he had to really focus to make out what Adam had hinted at. Not a single fast heartbeat, but two, just slightly out of sync.

  “Twins?”

Adam nodded and Ben could see he was waiting for his reaction.

“It does run in the family,” he conceded with a grin. “We’ll have a ready-made family of our own by next year. And a Pack. All I ever wanted.”

Adam smiled, wrapping arms around him in a tight hug. “So can we really go live in Glenoak? With Sam and Lianna?”

  “You’d like that?” he asked.

  “I’d like it a lot. We’ll have a family.”

“We’ll be a family,” he corrected gently, “and we’ll be Pack. That’s the best kind of family.”

Adam settled against him with a yawn, closing his eyes.

“I’m glad you chose me. You didn’t have to, all those months ago, back when Terrance and Josh took me. You could have let me go and been done with it. I’m really glad you didn’t.”

  “So am I, Adam.
So am I.” He wrapped his arms around his Omega, holding him close.

  Epilogue

  Two months later

Adam slept soundly beside him in the car as they completed the last leg of their journey to Glenoak. Sam sat in the driver’s seat, humming under his breath and tapping the steering wheel.

The Omega next to him stirred, letting out a little sound of discontent. He’d been having nightmares for weeks, mostly about Harvey and the things he’d done, but also about Tobias.

It took time for Ben to coax from Adam what the dreams were about but it didn’t take him long to see the pattern. Adam dreamt about Harvey and Tobias getting hold of the babies. His greatest fear now that he knew Ben wasn’t leaving him. The Alpha was thankful that that particular fear had been alleviated.

He wrapped one arm around Adam’s shoulders and tugged him closer while his free hand slipped under Adam’s t-shirt to lay across his stomach.

Nearly five months along and Adam’s bump was becoming noticeable. Ben could feel it, hear the patter of the twin’s hearts and, if he was very lucky, he’d sometimes feel them move.

Adam talked to them a lot. Countless times Ben had returned home to find him reading to them from the encyclopedia or one of the many novels he’d collected. He’d also devoured all three of the pregnancy and baby books Alicia had given them.

The Omega’s sleepy murmurs grew distressed and Ben rubbed his palm in circles across Adam’s skin.

“I’m here, Adam. You’re safe, all three of you.”

Adam’s eyes opened at the words and he yawned, looking around in sleepy confusion.

  “Where are we?”

“Just coming up to Sebastian’s house now. Time to rise and shine.”

“Oh.” Adam rolled his shoulders, glancing out the windows. “We’re here already?”

“Yeah, you slept most of the morning.”

They turned the last corner and started up the road to the Alpha’s house. Alicia and Sebastian were at the door, waiting to greet them.
